It’s Only Common Sense: OCCAM—the Time Is Now

04/22/2024 | Dan Beaulieu -- Column: It's Only Common Sense
One of my favorite books is a little tome called Who Moved My Cheese? Even those of you who don’t spend a lot of time reading books have at least heard of it and know that it refers to people, especially in business, who are so stuck in their ways that they get upset when something changes. In our business, we know this kind of thinking is especially true. In fact, it always makes me laugh when one of my innovative friends finds a new way to do something and is afraid that someone will steal his idea. I always tell him that no one in our business, especially a PCB engineer, has ever thought about someone else’s innovative idea enough to steal it.

It’s Only Common Sense: 16 Proven Strategies for Making the Most of Your Trade Show Dollars

04/08/2024 | Dan Beaulieu -- Column: It's Only Common Sense
So many times, people and companies spend a small fortune exhibiting at trade shows like IPC APEX EXPO 2024 when they have no idea why they are going, what they will do there, and what they expect to accomplish at the show. It’s plain dumb. You must have a plan, man. Know why you’re going and what will happen when you get there. Set goals and make sure that you achieve those goals.

Creators of SMT UHDI Test Board Vehicle Discuss this Important Project

04/04/2024 | Nolan Johnson, I-Connect007
Chrys Shea of Shea Engineering and Altium’s David Haboud educate us on the latest revision of the SMT test board for UHDI testing, presented at the SMTA UHDI Symposium on March 26 in Arizona. Chrys was involved in the original SMT test board, introduced roughly five years ago. She and David discuss recreating the test board to be appropriate for UHDI, the genesis and history of this project, and why industry members should make use of it to benchmark their processes.

Dan’s Biz Bookshelf: The Entrepreneurial Brain

11/22/2023 | Dan Beaulieu -- Column: Dan's Biz Bookshelf
Author Jeff Hays is a “serial entrepreneur” who has achieved much success, so, in many ways, reading his book is like spending time with a wise mentor. I like how he not only highlights his business successes but writes candidly about his failures: What didn’t work and why. For me, these stories are perhaps the most helpful part of the book, which is not only informative and factual, but inspirational and encouraging.

The Shaughnessy Report: Simply Speaking

11/09/2023 | Andy Shaughnessy -- Column: The Shaughnessy Report
During a recent trade show, a group of us were wondering how much money and labor is wasted annually because of PCB designs that are over-constrained or otherwise needlessly complex. It had to be millions of dollars, or maybe even tens of millions. As we reveal in this month’s issue of Design007 Magazine, this happens for a variety of reasons, such as increasing signal speeds, faster rise and fall times, and shrinking silicon technologies.
